Facebook Fights Clickbait with Two New Updates

Some publishers violate Facebook’s policies by posting content that display fake play buttons, luring users into clicking their links. But according to Facebook, that’s all going to change. The network recently announced two new updates that will decrease the likelihood of deceptive clickbait posts popping up in your feed.

What Do These Updates Do Exactly?

One update focuses on diminishing posts with fake video play buttons. The other diminishes posts containing static images posing as video content.

Both updates will reduce the likelihood of these types of deceptive posts to populate news feeds. They function as limitations, penalizing publishers who post deceptive content.

Facebook says we can expect to see fewer deceptive posts in our feeds over the next few weeks.

The Impact on Publishers

Facebook won’t demote the posts of publishers who follow their policies. The updates only affect videos with fake or deceptive content. If you keep your content authentic and honest, you won’t have any issues.

These updates align with the network’s ongoing efforts toward honest and accurate news feed content. Facebook says, “Authentic communication is one of our core news feed values, and we know our community values it.”
