Once only accessible to a limited selection of brands, thousands of merchants now have access to Shopping on Instagram, formerly called Shoppable Photo Tags, a feature that tags retailers’ websites, products, and prices, on an Instagram photo. This feature presents merchants with a significant boost in revenue potential, stemming from Instagram’s massive user base.
Instagram and Shopify are allowing sellers to tag products in their Instagram posts, which, when tapped, direct users to the merchant’s online store, without exiting the app. This Shopping on Instagram feature originally rolled out last year and has been in a testing phase throughout 2017 as shoppable photo tags.
The Specifics
According to The Verge and Shopify, here’s what we know about this Shopping on Instagram update:
- Sellers can only tag five products in a single post.
- Only US users can see these tags.
- Only physical items (clothing, books, etc.) can be tagged.
- Sellers need Instagram’s approval to use Shopping on Instagram by October 16.
Additionally, Shopping on Instagram is still in its testing period, which means everyone will have access to the feature soon enough.
